Valjean "Val" Goodman

Valjean Clarence Goodman, 89, of Altoona, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at Prairie Vista Village in Altoona. Funeral services for Val will be held on Monday, March 25, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 24, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Val and his family.   Valjean Goodman was born on February 16, 1930 in Melbourne, Iowa to Clarence and Ida Bollenbacher Goodman. He grew up on a farm southwest of Melbourne. Val graduated from Melbourne High School in 1949. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951 until 1953. On January 29, 1965, Val was united in marriage to Marcine Ankrum. He had worked for R.D. Stewart Inc. as a carpenter for 40 years, retiring in 1996. Val enjoyed working around the house, doing remodeling and building projects as well as yard work and gardening.   Val is survived by his son, Tom (Pam) Goodman of Altoona and step children: William (Bruni) Levings, Kathy Levings and John (Denise) Levings. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Brooke (Grant) Bunce, Derik (Meg) Goodman and Nicholas Goodman; step grandchildren: Laura (Mark) McKibben, Lisa (Jason) Sodders, Sarah (Brett) Schutt, Bill Levings, Joseph (Laura) Dhyne, Kane (Sam) Jacobson, Kayla (Eric) McGehee and Alli (Aaron) Keller and  his brother Eugene (Jean) Goodman of Ankeny as well as numerous great grandchildren and other family members.   Val is preceded in death by his wife Marcine, who passed away in 2003; parents Clarence and Ida; brother Duane Goodman and step grandson Adam Levings.
