Verdel Vajgrt, 78, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Iowa River Hospice Home with her loving family by her side. Funeral services for Verdel will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 10, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Richard King officiating. Public visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 9, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church where her family will be present to greet family and friends. The family has requested a private family burial following the service. Memorial contributions may be directed in Verdels name to her family. Verdel Dowden was born on March 5, 1936, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of Delbert and Verna (Vieth) Dowden. She was raised and educated in the Conrad school district graduating from Conrad High School. Following high school Verdel attended nursing school at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. She was united in marriage to James Vajgrt on November 1, 1957 at the Conrad Methodist Church. From this union three children were born: Terri, Dave and Roger. The two later divorced. Verdel spent most of her working years as a nurse in Marshalltown and retired from Grandview Heights. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, TTT, 20th Century Club, and every Friday night a group of close friends would go to Mama Digrado's for dinner. She had a passion for her grandkids, grandpets, reading, being at Lake Ponderosa and being around all of the action. Verdel also taught all of her grandchildren to play the piano. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Terri (Jim) Pothast, Dave (Lisa Gassman) Vajgrt and Roger (Laura) Vajgrt; grandchildren: Anna, Haley, Adam, Noah and Sarah; many nieces and nephews; special family members: Valerie Bellile, Carolann Ballenger and Irene Ballard. She is preceded in death by her parents: Delbert and Verna; and one brother John Dowden. Visitation: 1st Presbyterian Church Sunday November 9, 2014, 4;00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at 1st Presbyterian Church
