Verl Shipley

Verl Shipley, 93, of Clemons, died Saturday, August 6, in the peace of his home at Clemons. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, August 11, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in the Prairie View Cemetery at Gilman. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Ph. 641-844-1234. Born on December 17, 1917, at Albion, he was the son of Cloe and Flora Belle (Long) Shipley. He graduated from the Liberty Consolidated Schools Class of 1936. Verl was the last surviving member of that class. On June 20, 1939, at Osceola, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Irene Hauser. They made their home in southern Iowa including the towns of Corydon and Monroe before moving to Clemons in the mid-1940s. The couple retired in 1981 and moved into the town of Clemons. Mr. Shipley had been a member of the Farm Bureau. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Bev (Don) Drew of rural Marshalltown, Donald Shipley of State Center, Ron (Jean) Shipley of Clemons, Joanne (Eric) Swaney of Winona, MN, and Judi Shipley Gard of Sioux Falls, SD, 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, his half-brother Darrell Shipley of State Center and many nieces and nephews. In death, he rejoined his parents, his step-mother Sophie Shipley, four sisters, one brother, half-brother Dean Shipley, half-sister Donna Eggers, son-in-law Jerry Gard, two grandchildren and his loving wife.
