Verle Eugene Luethje, 77, of Marshalltown, died Saturday, November 26, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. According to Verles wishes, following cremation, no services are planned. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Memorials may be directed in his name to his family. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Verle and his family.Verle was born April 14, 1934, in Crystal Township, Gladbrook, Iowa, the son of Carl Rudolf and Viola Irene (Paustian) Luethje. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth and graduated from the Gladbrook High School. Verle actively served his country as a member of the United States Army from February of 1954 May of 1958. He was united in marriage to Betty Marie Patenaude on June 9, 1956, in Clay Center, Kansas. To this union four daughters were born. Verle and his family lived in Garwin during most of his working career where he served as the town police officer and also worked as the maintenance and water director. During this time their family also worked as caretakers for the Erickson Funeral Home where they helped care for families. Verle also drove the ambulance serving the community of Garwin and surrounding areas.In 1995, Verle and Betty moved to Marshalltown where they made their home a loving place for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren to visit.During his free time Verle enjoyed fishing, his companion pet dogs Dottie and Tequila, trains, feeding the ducks at Riverside Cemetery and most of all spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Verle is survived by his wife of 55 years Betty Marie Luethje of Marshalltown, his four daughters: Susan Luethje of Des Moines, Carol (Jerry) Depping of Dike, Bonnie (Roy) Grisham-Luethje of Rockwell City and Marcia Wheeler of Marshalltown, his brother Allan Luethje of Independence, Missouri, his twelve grandchildren and his ten great-grandchildren.Verle was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and his three brothers: Leon John, Melvin Carl and Lynn Walter.
