Verlin McAllister, 72, of Whitten, died Monday, November 5th, at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services celebrating Verlins life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 9th, at the Whitten Community Church in Whitten with Pastor Jim Hartman officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Benson Cemetery at Whitten with military honors by the Conrad American Legion. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Verlin and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. Born on September 20th, 1935, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Ray and Julia (Schein) McAllister. He attended school in Burlington until age eight, then country schools near Whitten, the Whitten Public Schools and later graduated from the Eldora High School in 1953. Verlin served our country proudly in the United States Army for two years. On June 28th, 1959, he was united in marriage to Donnavee Keenan in Grinnell. They have resided in Whitten until moving to their country home near Whitten in 1984. He was employed at ACCO Seeds, the AMOCO plant at Whitten and Bobs Farm Center for over 30 years until retiring. Most recently, he was a driver for Nucara Pharmacy in Conrad. Verlin was an active member of the Whitten Community Church and served on the board, the Conrad American Legion, the Conrad Lions Club, served on the Whitten Volunteer Fire Department, was on town council and Mayor of Whitten. Many will remember Verlin for his love of family, friends and community. Few were strangers to this kind, willing man who enjoyed dogs, animals, his tractors, life and driving people to places new like the peony fields near Charles City or the tulip gardens at Pella. He truly was a friend to all. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 48 years, Donnavee, his three children: Debbie (Kevin) Cassens of Vancouver, Washington, Carla (Gene) Cummins of Whitten and Monty (Donna) McAllister of Eldora, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. In death he has rejoined his parents and infant sister.
