Vern Gallentine, 84, of Marshalltown, died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center. Mass of Christian Burial for Vern will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 28, 2012, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Burial will follow services at Logan Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 27, 2012, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home where his family will be present to greet friends. A public vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be directed in Verns name to his family. Vern was born February 22, 1928, in the rural Van Cleve, Iowa area, the son of Harry and Vera (Eberle) Gallentine. He graduated from the Van Cleve High School. He was united in marriage to Carmen Martinez Villegas on October 17, 1970, in Torreon Coahuila, Mexico. Throughout his lifetime, Vern was employed by the railroad and at Swifts in Marshalltown. Vern was a very active and devoted husband, father and grandfather to his family.He coached girls softball, enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and stock car racing. Above all else, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time supporting his children and grandchildren with all of their many activities. Vern is survived by his wife, Carmen Gallentine of Marshalltown, his two daughters: Gabriela Gallentine of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Juana Lucia Gallentine of Marshalltown; his grandchildren: Ramon Alexander and Edson Dominic; his brothers: Maynard Gallentine of Colorado Springs, Colorado and John (Marjorie) Gallentine of Carlisle, Iowa; his sisters: Garnet McKay of Rock Island, Illinois and Beth (Bill) Gilgen of Marshalltown, Iowa and several nieces and nephews. Vern was preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles.
