She graduated from Garwin High School at which she was a member of the girls’ six-on-six basketball team and was valedictorian of her graduating class in 1942. Vernice was formerly married to Frank J. Detrick of Marshalltown and lived many years on west Linn Street in Marshalltown.  She worked for Marshall County for 25 years before retiring in 1990.  During her employment with the County she began in the Marshall County school system department and then worked the following 24 years in the Marshall County Treasurer’s office in both motor vehicle and tax departments.  Vernice was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish – St. Mary Catholic Church and served as a past president of St. Mary Catholic Church C.C.W.  She was a talented musician, playing the clarinet, violin, and piano.  Additionally, she enjoyed sewing, reading, caring for her flowers, and working puzzles during winter months.  Her greatest passion and joy in her life was her family and she never missed acknowledging each person’s birthday with a card and a phone call.  Vernice was always organizing a family gathering be it Christmas Eve at her home or her annual family picnic held at Riverview Park.  Her calendar was always filled with dates for swim meets, volleyball, baseball, softball, T-ball, soccer, football, and many other school events of her grandchildren, and then it was for her great-grandchildren.  She was a role model for her children and grandchildren instilling in them her strong work ethic, her sense of values, and love of family.  Her deep and abiding faith gave her strength and guidance through the years.  Vernice was fiercely independent and frequently expressed her appreciation for the support her family gave her to live on her own.              Vernice will be greatly missed by her family and friends.  Those surviving her include 9 of her 10 children:  sons Marvin (Debra) Detrick of Marshalltown and Paul (Michelle) Detrick of Gilman, daughters Diana Slifer and Carol Huff of Marshalltown, Sandra (Charles) Caligiuri of Des Moines, Paulette Gretter and Sharon (Tim) Winkel of Ankeny, Janice (Dan) McNary of Urbandale, and Elaine (Richard) Rund of Cheyenne, WY, and Son-in-law Tim Vaughn of Ankeny.  Additional survivors include 27 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Audrey Vaughn of Ankeny, 6 infant grandchildren; her brother and his wife, LeRoy (Irene) Shrader of Omaha, Nebraska; her former husband, Frank Detrick, his brother and his wife Clyde (Delores), and his sister and her husband Naomi (Lavern) Winkelman.            The family would like to extend a special thank you to the entire staff at Grandview Heights for the incredible loving care and kindness they showed to Vernice and her family during her time at Grandview Heights. A thank you is also extended to Dr. Scurr and his staff for their care.    Memorial contributions may be made to the Marshalltown Salvation Army (107 W. State St., Marshalltown, IA 50158), the Children’s Cancer Connection (2708 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312-5214), or a donation to the charity of the donor’s choice.  Mitchell Family Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Vernice and her family.
