Vernon Bein, 90, of West Des Moines, formerly of Beaman and Marshalltown, joined his Lord and Savior on November 23, 2015, in West Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Beaman United Methodist Church on Friday, November 27, 2015. Visitation for friends and family will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. with the funeral to follow with Pastor Gene Kubli officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Vienna Cemetery at Beaman. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown is caring for Vernon and his family. Vernon Alfred Bein was born April 18, 1925 on his Grandfathers farm north of Beaman, Iowa. His parents were Lelia Mabel (Binford) Bein and F. Elmer Bein. Vernon lived where he was born until he was 17 when he moved to his maternal Grandfathers farm south of Beaman. This is a Century Farm and has been in the family for over 140 years. Vernon served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1948 where he served at Whidbey Island, WA as a Control Tower Operator until his honorable discharge. Returning from service, he joined his father on the family farm. Vernon attended Iowa State College for Farm Operations and then a VA course in farming. On April 9, 1950, Vernon married Jeanne Pond at the First Friends Church in Marshalltown. They continued to reside in Beaman and raise four children. He was a dairy farmer and milked up to 60 Guernsey milk cows and had up to 120 cattle at times. He sold Grade A milk and had a state-of-the-art milking parlor for a small dairy farmer. He also raised Pioneer Seed Corn for over 25 years. Vernon and Jeanne raised four children- John (Nancy) of Bondurant, Diane (Pat) McDermott of Ankeny, Linda (John) Fevold of Story City, and Susan (Todd) Thompson of Urbandale. He was also blessed with 11 grandchildren:Tim, Jeff, Andy and Megan (McDermott) Mason, Sarah (Bein) Espinoza and Eric Bein, Adam, Kiersten and Michaella Fevold, Scott and Kylie Thompson; 10 great-grandchildren: Helena McDermott, Ryan McDermott, Raegan McDermott, Rylee McDermott, Erica Espinoza, Isabella Espinoza, Liliana Espinoza, Xander Fevold, Jaxon Fevold and Autumn McDermott and an adopted daughter from Germany- Siglinde Kaiser. During the 1973-1974 school year the family had the privilege of hosting Siglinde Kaiser, a foreign ex-change student from Osnabruck, Germany. Siglinde is part of the family and has made numerous trips back to the United States. She is now living in Berlin. Vernon was a life-long member of the Beaman United Methodist Church. Vernon served on the Co-op Board in Beaman and the Beaman United Methodist Church Board. Vernon enjoyed recreational boating and was a member of the Des Moines Power Squadron for many years. Vernon and Jeanne traveled extensively including: every state in the United States including Alaska and Hawaii, Europe, and South America. For 25 years they wintered in southern Florida. In 1987 Vernon and Jeanne retired from farming and purchased a home in Marshalltown. Jeanne passed away in 2008 after 58 years of marriage. In 2011, Vernon decided to move closer to his family and made his home at Edgewater Retirement Communities in West Des Moines. At Edgewater, Vernon met Edie Hobermann. Vernon and Edie have enjoyed traveling together and many hours of companionship. A Memorial fund is being established for Vernon Bein.
