Vernon Cooling

Vernon L. Cooling, 87, of Garwin, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at his home with family beside him.

Vernon Cooling was born on February 15th, 1935 to Eldon and Julia Cooling in Clemons, Iowa. In the early part of his life, he attended various schools in Marshall County and graduated from Newburg High School in 1953 after the family moved to Newburg, Iowa. In school, he played basketball and excelled at baseball, living stories that he would regale his grandchildren with through the years. On November 27th, 1954, Vernon married Ruthie Nott. In his early years of marriage they lived in Marshalltown, where he worked at Strands bakery, baking buns and bread. In the autumn of 1959, the family moved southeast of Gilman, and while still working at the bakery, Vernon began dairy and crop farming. In the winter of 1967, they moved to a farm east of Garwin, still keeping his bakery job for a few years, as he continued farming and dairying. After leaving the bakery, Vernon drove the school bus for Garwin, around farmwork. He retired from farming after 40 plus years. Vernon then worked maintenance for East Marshall as a custodian and bus driver. He enjoyed working at the school and helping the children.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruth. Children: Sheryl, Daniel and Greg. Grandchildren: Stephanie, Kellie, Kendra, Colt, Megan, Nathan, Ashleigh, Chelsea, Lindsay, Austin, Alyssa and Riley. He is also survived by his siblings: Lyle, Margaret and Duane.

Vernon is preceded in death by his sons: Rick and Ray; grandchildren: Phillip and Sarah; and parents: Julia and Eldon.
