Vernon George Katzer, 72, of Marshalltown, died Friday, April 6, 2007, at the Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 12th, at the Fellowship Baptist Church with Pastor Ed Hannahs officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 11th from 6-8:00 p.m. Memorials can be directed to the Fellowship Baptist Church or the LeGrand Library. Ph. 641-844-1234.Born on November 28, 1934, at home in Grundy County, he was the son of George and Stella (Conrad) Katzer. He attended country school in Grundy County and graduated from Garwin High School in 1952.On April 12, 1953, he was united in marriage to Joann Dobson at the Carlton Brethren Church. They lived most of their married life on a farm in rural Garwin, and recently moved to Marshalltown. Vernon was a farmer and was employed at Fisher Controls where he retired in 1994 after working 25 years.Vernon was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was in the choir. He was also a member of the mens prayer group, Grandpeople, and was instrumental in starting the Tama Co. Chapter of Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed woodworking, reading and attending Wednesday Morning Breakfast in LeGrand. Left to mourn his loss are his wife, Joann; daughters: Connie (Bruce) Bolen of Tama, Deb Ratliff of Garwin, and Marcia (Bob) Ledingham of Clovis, New Mexico; grandchildren: Kathy (Bruce) Kucera, Darin Dostal, Tony Bolen, Mark Bolen, Jill Ratliff, Clayton Ratliff, Lydia De Los Santos, and Steven De Los Santos; great-grandchildren: Katelyn Kucera and Nathan Kucera; siblings: Dorothy Brindle, Betty (Maurice) Kollasch, Ron (Ann) Katzer, and Bonnie (Harold) Urhammer; sister-in-law, Heidi Katzer, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.In death he has rejoined his parents, and one brother, Larry.
