Vernon R. Middleton, 82, of Marshalltown, passed away Monday, March 19, 2012 at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center.Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with Bobby Shomo Officiating. Private family burial will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family at this time. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Vernon and his family.Vernon Ralph Middleton was born on May 21, 1929 in Bangor, Iowa; he was the son of Fred and Mayme (Johnson) Middleton. Vern had attended school in Lamoille and St. Anthony, Iowa. In 1946, he joined the United Army and served in the Occupational Forces in Japan. On September 10, 1949 Vern was united in marriage to Elizabeth Betty Burg. Vern had been employed with Marshalltown Trowel from 1950 to 1993. Vern and Betty raised their family in Marshalltown and St. Anthony before moving to Fayetteville AR. in 1982.Upon Vern's retirement in 1993 they returned to Marshalltown.Vern had been a member ofthe Marshalltown Lions Club and was on the board of the Senior Citizens Center in Marshalltown. He enjoyed golfing, playing pool with his buddies at the senior center, and watching high school baseball. He also enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and Drake Basketball, (especially during the Tom Davis era.)Vern loved his work and always enjoyed working with his coworkers. He will be remembered for the love of his family, his children, grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. Vern will also be remembered for his ability to always have a story to tell.He is survived by his children: Ann (Joe) Lander of Marshalltown, Iowa and David (Kari) Middleton of Polk City, Iowa; his grandchildren: Christopher (Shannon) Lander, Andrea (Chuck) Lander Johnson and Michael Middleton; his step grandchildren: Wyatt Johnson and Payton Johnson; and his great-grandchildren: Braelyn Lander, Adysen Lander, Ashlee Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Destinee Middleton, Jade Middleton.In death Vernon will rejoin his parents: Fred and Mayme; his wife, Betty in 2005; his son, Dennis; his daughter, Kathy Lynn; and Vernons siblings: Kenneth, Vance, Wayne, Clifton and Delos.
