Vernon L. Stalzer, 71, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. A Funeral Mass for Vern will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at St. Henry’s Catholic Church with Father Don Czapla officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Haverhill.  Public visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Vern’s name to his family which will designated between JDRF and the John Stoddard Cancer Center in Des Moines, Iowa.  For further information or to send a condolence please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call (641) 844-1234.  Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Vern and his family. Vernon Lawrence Stalzer was born on February 13, 1947 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Margaret (Neuroth) Stalzer.  He graduated from West Marshall High School in 1965.  Following high school, Vern honorably served our country by enlisting in the United States Army between the years of 1968-1971.  Following his time with the Army, he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from Drake University.  On June 10th, 1967, Vern was united in marriage to the love of his life, Jane Lawler, in Eldora, IA.  They made their home in Marshalltown where the couple was blessed with two children: Brad and Lori.  Vern worked for many years at Fisher Controls and retired in 2002.  He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and the local VFW.  Vern had a passion for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, playing pickle ball, golfing, running, biking, bowling, dancing, reading, playing cards and dominos as well as wintering in Texas.  His greatest passion in life was being at all of his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. Left to cherish his memory are his loving children: Bradley (Mindy) Stalzer and Lori (Weston) Waterbeck; his precious grandchildren: Savannah, Logan and Ethan Stalzer, and Trenton and Kailey Waterbeck; brother: Melvin (Joyce) Stalzer as well as many nieces and nephews; the Lawler family; and His “Texas” family and friends. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Jane Stalzer; parents: Lawrence and Margaret; and two brothers: Ronald and Orville.
