Vernon Floyd Weitzell, 85, of Green Mountain, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at the University of Iowa Medical Center. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 4, 2019 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home at 10:00 with a public visitation held one hour prior to the service. Vernon was born on October 30, 1933 to the parents of Floyd and Minnie (Giesenberg) Weitzell in Marshalltown, Iowa. Vernon attended the rural country schools and was a graduate of Green Mountain High school with the class of 1951. After his schooling Vernon served his country honorably by enlisting in the United States Army. After his return from the Army he married Shirley Fisher and the two made their lives together in Green Mountain. Vernon was very proud to have been a farmer in the area with his brother Allen. Vernon’s family was his pride and joy, he would carry photos with him everywhere he went and would proudly show off his children and grandchildren’s photo to any one; even if they had already had an opportunity to see them. He showed so many people the photographs were almost unrecognizable. His love for his family crossed over into his other passion of fishing. As a family they would take trips to northern Minnesota and spend time golfing and fishing. When back home Vernon never missed a sporting event for his children or his grandchildren, weather was not a factor rain or shine he was there cheering his family on. Vernon could have been found at the local elevator playing pepper with his local farmers in the mornings. Vernon loved farming and enjoyed raising his animals most recently he was incredibly proud of his baby lamb. Vernon was the textbook definition of a family man and fantastic friend, any person that had the privilege of knowing him shares the same grief at his passing. Left to cherish his memory is his children; Craig (Lori) Weitzell, Mark (Kris) Weitzell, and daughter-in-law Terri Weitzell-Meyer, grandchildren; Kyle (Elizabeth) Weitzell, Lauren (Kevin) Fridley, Jordan Weitzell, Justin Weitzell, and Brandon Weitzell. Also his great grandchildren; Will Fridley, Gavin Fridley, and Andrew Weitzell. He is preceded in death by his wife Shirley, his son Brian, brother Allen, and his parents Floyd and Minnie. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to be used at a later date once a fund has been established. For condolences please visit www.Mitchellfh.com or call (641)-844-1234.
