Virgil Amendt, 90, of Melbourne, Iowa passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2016, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. The family will be holding a Memorial service at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016, at the Iowa Veterans Home in their chapel. For condolences or questions please visit; www.mitchellfh.com . Virgil Amendt was born on July 8, 1926, in Melbourne, Iowa; he was the son of Richard and Laura (Oberhelman) Amendt. Virgil attended school in the Van Cleve School District graduating with the class of 1944. He served our country honorably in the United States Army from February 1945, until November of 1946. On January 12, 1976, Virgil was united in marriage to Earlene Amendt at the Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. They had lived in Marshalltown for a short time and then moved to Kilkenny, Minnesota and owned and operated Vinegar Hill Grill and Bar until retirement, they then moved to Waseca, Minnesota until Earlenes death. Virgil then moved into the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Virgil had been a member of the American Legion and Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing, golf and his favorite was his family time. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Greg Amendt of Des Moines, Iowa, Scott(Teresa) Amendt of Pleasantville, Iowa, Brad(Debra) Amendt of Iowa City, Iowa, Linda(Ray) Praska of Albion, Iowa and Kay(Jim) De Grado of Marshalltown, Iowa, several grandchildren and a great-grandchild, and sister, Velma (John) Kemp of Colorado Springs. In death Virgil rejoins his parents Richard and Laura, wife, Earlene, brother and sister-in-law, Laverne (Carol) Amendt and sister, Barbara Carter.
