Virgil E. Klemme, 87, of State Center, was called home to the Lords Home on Friday, April 3rd, at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard, Iowa, while in their care and his loving family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 7th, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 206 1st Avenue South, in State Center with Pastor Mike Maddick officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Hillside Cemetery with military honors by the State Center American Legion Harlan C. Pfantz Post #122. Visitation will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 6th, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in State Center. Memorials may be directed to the church or to the Hubbard Care Center. Born Virgil Ernest Klemme on February 25th, 1922, on the Klemme Family Farm southeast of Hubbard, he was the third child born to Ernest and Minnie (Schnormeier) Klemme. He graduated from the New Providence High School in 1939 and worked on the family farm until being called to the service in 1944. Virgil served our country honorably in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946. He was stationed in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge as a 30 caliber machine gunman and in the military police. Following his return to the states, he worked as a carpenter and later began farming. On April 29th, 1956, he was united in marriage to Eloise F. German at the Trinity Lutheran Church in State Center. They farmed in the New Providence area until 1961 when they moved to the German family farm near State Center. Virgil was an avid card player, gardener, carpenter and enjoyed reading, being with his family, helping neighbors and visiting. Mr. Klemme worked for Jake Donaldson, Spreads-All, Cooper Manufacturing, and the State Center Creamery while continuing farming and milking. He was a charter member of the FFA in New Providence, 4-H Leader, State Center American Legion Post #122, Marshall County Milk Producers, Trinity Lutheran Church and the Cissys II Coffee Club. Virgil is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Eloise, daughters Eileen (Guy Richard) DeVore of Pleasant Hill, Nancy (Steve) Long of Webster City, Mary Klemme of State Center, sons Paul (M.J.) Klemme of Coralville and Jay (Susie) of State Center, four granddaughters: Emily and Alicia Long and Elizabeth and Gabrielle Klemme and one step-grandson, Dan DeVore. Also surviving are his brother, Arvin (Julia) Klemme of Hubbard, sister-in-law Wilma Klemme of Aplington and several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harley and Kenneth, and sisters Bernice Krueger and Elaine Huffman. The Klemme family wishes to express their gratitude to the Hubbard Care Center for the love and compassionate care Virgil received the past year and a half of his residence there.
