Virgil Leslie VanGorp, age 90, of Marshalltown, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Per the wishes of the family, cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life and graveside service with military honors will take place at a later date, to be determined. Virgil was born February 7, 1930 in Hand County, South Dakota to parents John and Maggie (VanGenderan) VanGorp and was the youngest of 13 children. He attended school at Searsboro, Iowa. He honorably served in the U.S. Army from June 1951-June 1953. While serving in the U.S. Army, he was stationed in Italy, Austria, and Germany and served in the Korean War. Virgil married the love of his life, Patricia Jane Lammert on September 21, 1986. He worked at Ford Garage for 15 years as a mechanic and retired from Fisher Control after 20 years. In his free time, Virgil enjoyed cars, motorcycles, camping and going to coffee. Left to cherish his memory is the love of his life, Patricia VanGorp; his children Pamela Reed, Sheryl (Gary) Edwards, Patti Jay, and Janet (Ron) Parks (Cottreville, MI), Scott VanGorp (Laos), Rhonda VanGorp, and Rob (Linda) VanGorp (Oklahoma City, OK); 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, daughter Debra Lammert and son James Lammert.
