Virginia Hoop

July 6, 1933 — March 30, 2025

Virginia Hoop, age 91, of Marshalltown, passed away peacefully in the peace and comfort of her home on Sunday, March 30th.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 5th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one-hour prior. A memorial fund being designated to assist with the cost of swimming lessons will be established at the Y in Marshalltown. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com.


Born Virginia Snyder on July 6th, 1933, in Marshalltown, she was one of eight children born to Earl and Margaret (Baer) Snyder. She graduated from the Marshalltown High School.


On July 13th, 1952, at the 1st United Methodist Church in Marshalltown, she was united in marriage to John Hoop. They made their home in Marshalltown. In 1971, Hoop Standard was established at the Marshalltown Mall. Virginia was the behind-the-scenes homemaker making sure everything with her four children was attended to while John ran the family business.


She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, morning coffee with neighbor ladies and going shopping with her grandchildren. Virginia always stood up for what was right. She was the family protector and the one who made them proud. He granddaughter best phrased it saying “Two great families (the Hoops and the Snyders) came together to form one.” Virginia was proud of her family and attended faithfully ball games, swimming events and other activities.


Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Teresa (Jerry) Coughlin and Shari (Dale) Clark; daughter-in-law Jackie Hoop; grandchildren- Travis (Cynthia) Clark, Jill (Ray) Moorman, Emily (Matt) Clawson, Elise Hoop, Abby Hoop, Jennifer Fleming, and Alex (Jessica) Hoop as well as 16 great-grandchildren, her brother Paul Snyder, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.


In death, Virginia rejoined her parents, her husband John, sons Johnny and Jeff, siblings-Lola, Melvin, Chloris Levis, Lucille Freiberg, Kathy Oetker and Ronald (in infancy); her sister-in-law Kay Snyder and brothers-in-law- Omer Oetker and Bernard Levis. Also preceding her in death were nephews Michael Oetker and Doug Freiberg and niece Janet Levis.
