Born on August 4th, 1927 at Chelsea, Iowa, she was the daughter of Frank and Mabel (Randall) Tesar. She received her education in a rural schoolhouse near the Haven Cemetery. On July 1st, 1944 she was united in marriage to Claude Slifer at the parsonage of the Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. They made their home in Marshalltown. Virginia was employed with her son-in-law, Hans Beecken at Scott Tent and Awning. Her main job, though, was being wife, mom and grandma. She worked hard for her family, raising seven children. Every meal was homemade and a small house always accommodated everyone at Christmas and get-togethers. It didn’t matter where you sat as long as she had everyone home. She loved her dogs, making ceramics, crocheting, going to the casino and out to dinner with Claude, listening to polka and country music and dancing. She enjoyed shopping at “Wal-Mark and K-Mark” (as she called them) and was known for her soft side when the grandchildren were involved- even though her kids would have never gotten away with it! Left to cherish her memory are her children: David (Sue) Slifer, Tina Roberts, Lynette (Curtis) Miller and Melinda (Craig) Wolken all of Marshalltown; 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren. In death, she rejoined her parents; her husband Claude; daughters: Debbie Briggs, Barb Beecken (Hans) and Claudia (Willie) Backhaus and her sisters: Leona, Kathryn and Frances.
