Wayne Waltermire, age 88 of Marshalltown, passed away at the Des Moines VA Medical Center on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Wayne Wilbur Waltermire was born on June 4, 1938, at the family home in Marshalltown, the second of four children born to Ralph and Ruth (Wikle) Waltermire. He attended Marshalltown Public Schools until his family moved to southern California in his teenage years.
Wayne enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, proudly serving his country for six years. He and his son, Wayne Jr., enjoyed attending veterans’ events together.
Wayne worked for JA Bozung and Precision Tube Bending as a machinist until his retirement in the early 2000s. He moved back to Marshalltown in 2006. Wayne was a member of the Green Mountain United Church of Christ. Wayne enjoyed going to the YMCA, fishing, woodworking, and experimenting with cooking. He was a great cook, and always shared his new dishes with his church family.
In death, Wayne was reunited with his parents, Ralph and Ruth; brother, Marvin Waltermire; and his daughter, Kimmy Brewer. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Wayne (Kristin) Waltermire Jr. of Marshalltown and Debi (William) Yocum of West Liberty, KY; son-in-law, Gilbert Brewer of West Liberty, KY; grandchildren: Andrew Holmes, Gilbert Brewer III, Mary Margaret Brewer, and Aurora Jennings; and great-grandchildren: Mary Rose Brewer and Alyssa Brewer. He is also survived by his siblings: Eileen Howing of Marshalltown and Gary Waltermire of Pheonix, AZ.
Per Wayne’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Family Led Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the Green Mountain United Church of Christ. Burial will be at Green Mountain Cemetery, with military honors provided by the combined local VFW/American Legion.
