William Davis, 81, of Marshalltown, died Monday morning, June 11th, at the Grandview Heights Care Center while in their care and the Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14th, at the First Friends Church with Pastor Judith Marshall officiating. He will be laid to rest with full military honors by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839 in the Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 5-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Born on November 8th, 1925, at Grinnell, Iowa, he was the son of James and Cora Marie (Price) Davis. He received his education in the area of his birth. During WWII, he served our country proudly in the United States Marines Corps for 3 years. On December 2nd, 1945, in Marshalltown, he was united in marriage to Virginia Brees. They made their home in Kansas, California and Nebraska before returning to Marshalltown where he was a welder at Lennox and then machinist at the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Davis was a member of the First Friends Church, the American Legion, the VFW, and enjoyed trains- visiting depots and museums and even had a Christmas tree with just train ornaments. William made painted wood craft items such as tulips and birds for the garden, was very mechanical and enjoyed music and singing- especially Gene Autry and the Big Band type. Left to celebrate his life are his loving wife of 61 years, Virginia, four children: Carol (Dennis) Kirby of Malcom, Laura (Larry) Rinehart of Ankeny, Bill (Jan) Davis of Liscomb and Sue (Chad) Fellmer of Cedar Falls, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one nephew, two nieces and a host of friends.In death he has rejoined his parents, brother James and sister Evelyn Buchwald.
