William Bill Davis, 89- a member of the Greatest Generation and honored WWII Vet, passed from this life on the morning of Saturday, August 29th, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Mr. Davis was residing with his daughter in Steamboat Rock and was a former Marshalltown resident. Funeral services for Bill will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Public visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the service time. He will be laid to rest following the services at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery at Ottumwa, Iowa. Born William Evan Davis on February 26th, 1926, in Ottumwa, Iowa, he was one of four children born to James B. and Marie (Wilson) Davis. He graduated from Central High School in Ottumwa and later received his Bachelors Degree from St. Ambrose College in Davenport. During WWII, he served our country honorably in the United States Navy as a gunners mate on the USS Langley. On October 1st, 1951, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marjorie Ann Sullivan, at the St. Marys Catholic Church in Ottumwa. Bill had a colorful and hard-working career with Admiral in Galesburg, as well as General Electric in Bettendorf, Des Moines, and St. Louis. In their family life, Ottumwa, Galesburg, Bettendorf, Ankeny, Lake St. Louis, Marshalltown, Grundy Center, Steamboat Rock, could be called home. Never did Bills faith diminish no matter what community was home- he was always a devoted member of the Catholic church. Bill enjoyed golf, including his numerous trophies, and 17 holes-in-one , traveling, story-telling of life experieneces of his childhood, the Navy, school, basketball, and much more. He now can be a guardian angel to his favorite team, the Chicago Cubs, in hopefully a winning season! Most of all, he treasured his family and they in turn loved him with all their hearts. Left to cherish his memory are Marge, his loving wife of nearly 64 years; daughters- Rhonda Marie (Wayne) Johanson and Sandee Ann (Pete) Gavagan; seven grandchildren- Michelle (the late Randall) Lamb, Jack (Deb) Frost, Angie (Chad) Snyder, Lisa(Jeff)Larson, Phillip Gavagan, Amanda (Matt) Martin and Brock (Kayla) Johanson; his precious great-grandchildren- Samantha, Charlie, Ethan, Jordan, Haley, Ella, Luke, Kara, and Wyatt. He is also survived by his siblings- Marry Ann (late Henry)Berrier and Margaret Ann (Larry) Bottorf; sisters-in-law Mary (late John)Hannam and Helen (late George)Thode as well as nieces and nephews- Carol, Ann, Mike, Scott, Patty, Gary, Pam, Mark, Mike, Jim, Lisa, Theresa, Kaylean, and Don as well as other family and friends. In death, Bill rejoined his parents Jim and Marie Davis, brother Jim Davis, brothers-in-law John Hannam and Henry Berrier, George Thode and grandson-in-law Randall Lamb. May God grant mercy on this fine husband, father, grandfather, Veteran and friend called Bill.
