William Bill R. Garbe, 73, of Marshalltown, died Thursday, April 26th, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 30th, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Daniel Johnson officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Acacia Park Cemetery at Mendota Heights, Minnesota on Tuesday. Friends may call at the church one-hour prior to the services on Monday with his family present at that time. Memorials may be directed to the Bethesda Home in Watertown, Wisconsin. Born on May 2nd, 1933, in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was the son of Louis and Loretta (Legrid) Garbe. He graduated from the area of his birth and received his Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of Minnesota. He served our country honorably in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. On June 26th, 1954, in West St. Paul, MN. he was united in marriage to Marlys Johnson. They made their home in many communities including St. Paul, Omaha, Kansas City, Arkansas and Illinois before moving to Marshalltown 21 years ago where he was employed at Swifts. He retired in 1997 on his 64 birthday. Bill was an active member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church and enjoyed woodworking and woodcarving (making four grandfather clocks), fishing, playing cards and bridge, raising roses and his Christmas cactus, and treasured his family. Left to celebrate his life is his living wife of 52 years, Marlys, sons: Scott (Susan) Garbe of Cedar Rapids and Steven (Jennifer) of Lincoln, NE., six granddaughters: Bethany, Jessica, Kristen, Rachel, Megan and Anna, sisters Geraldine McArdell of South St. Paul and Alice (Roy) Hallgrien of West St. Paul and a host of friends. In death he has rejoined his parents, an infant brother and his daughter, Sharon who died in 1994.
